Example Module Positioning

Here you will find a myriad of module positions. There are positions literally anywhere you need to place information. There are 36 module positions on this page alone.
How they will be used and where to place these modules is really the responsibility of the designer under your direction. This is a key and integral part of an exceptional design.
The best way to understand Modules and module positioning is by conducting a simple experiment.
Go to google and type in any area of interest for you, for instance, for me I typed in "Flyfishing". Look at the top 5 searches for that keyword. You will notice that some sites aren't really expressing the view of the owner. Information is hard to find if it exists at all.
From an extensive study, we have found that the first 1-2 inches in the Left hand upper quadrant of any site is key to the reader. Interestingly enough, the majority of viewers will only read the first 5 headlines on any page before moving on.
The number of listed articles doesn't seem to make any difference. It is the first 5 lines that truly count. That having been said, our eyes will search from left to right and from the top to the bottom. If there is an area of interest at the top right hand quadrant of a site, our eyes will linger there longer than any other position. This is also where your eye rests after scanning the page.
Don't take my word for it, experiment yourself. Then write down where you look first and write down what you like or dislike about that site.
Before long you will have a very good understanding of how a winning web design is laid out. More importantly, you will know how you want your next site to look and feel.
